Lauren James scored a hat-trick as Chelsea as they beat Manchester United

Lauren James’ hat-trick lifted Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea to a 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

This Sunday, a sizable crowd flocked to Stamford Bridge to witness Chelsea Women take on Manchester United in their first Women’s Super League game following the winter break. And the positive energy emanating from the spectators was obviously contagious for the Blues.

Chelsea received their first corner kick of the game in just twenty seconds. Lauren James, who was jeered by United supporters each time she approached the ball, would open the score for the Blues three minutes later.

Lauren James scored twice in the opening 23 minutes to see Chelsea to victory; Man Utd replied through Hayley Ladd at the end of the first half before James completed her hat-trick late on; Blues restore their three-point lead at the top of the WSL

Although it was fantastic to take the lead so quickly in the match, the winning side usually becomes complacent as a result. Since Chelsea is a different kind of team, they didn’t let up on United in the closing third, pressing United relentlessly.

Surprisingly, United’s high lines rather than Chelsea’s were the source of the goal. Lauren was set up for another goal after new acquisition Natalie Björn’s exquisite deep pass from defense to the attacking third.

Hayes mentioned that she could count on James’ name to make up for the Australian’s absence, and on Sunday she delivered, putting her team up with a goal in the fifth minute and adding another before halftime.

United was able to draw even when Hayley Ladd cut the deficit in half, but James’ third goal in the 85th minute made sure the Blues would win and take a three-point lead at the top of the table.

In front of 20,473 spectators, Chelsea exerted early pressure, and it paid off when James finished in the bottom-right corner after Johanna Rytting Kaneryd slipped the ball to him.
